Malaysia has ended 20-year wait for the SEA Games gold medal
Malaysia has ended their 20-year wait for the SEA Games gold medal by defeating Vietnam 1-0 in the final in at the Main Stadium of the National Sports Complex in Vientiane on Thursday.
It was a hard road to the final by the young tigers and the match itself was another tough contest against a Vietnam team that went into the final as favourites.
Chances were at a premium for both teams but with extra time looming, the match was settled.
Six minutes remained when Vietnam’s Mai Xuan Hop put through his own net and from then there was no way back.
It was sweet revenge for Malaysia who lost to Vietnam 3-1 in the group stage on December 6.
The last time Malaysia won the gold medal was at home in Kuala Lumpur in 1989 when Singapore were the defeated finalists.
